About the Practice

Still Independent, Still in Newtown, After 40 Years

Almost every primary care practice around us has been bought by a hospital system. Community Health Associates has not. This page explains what that decision costs, what it protects, and why we keep making it.

Who We Are

A privately owned primary care practice at 153 S Main Street

Community Health Associates was founded and is still led by Dr. Jeffrey Friedman. For more than four decades it has been the primary care home for families across Newtown, Sandy Hook, Monroe, Southbury, Woodbury, Bethel, Brookfield, Oxford, and Danbury.

Today the practice is deliberately small: two providers, one office, and a front desk where the person answering the phone recognises your name. Dr. Friedman sees patients through the MDVIP concierge program. Cheryl Rosenthal, APRN sees patients of all ages and is accepting new patients now.

Small is not an accident here. It is the mechanism. A two-provider practice is the only structure in which a provider can genuinely carry your history in their head.

Why Independence Matters

What changes when a practice is sold

When a hospital system acquires a primary care practice, the sign on the door usually stays the same for a while. What changes is upstream of the exam room: who sets the appointment length, which specialists you can be referred to, which lab processes your bloodwork, and how many patients a provider is expected to see in a day.

None of those decisions are visible to a patient. All of them shape the visit. A fifteen-minute slot is a different kind of medicine than a thirty-minute one, and neither the doctor nor the patient chose it.

Staying independent means those decisions stay in the building. It is why this practice can still say, and mean, that every treatment decision is based on what is best for the patient — because there is nobody else in the room whose interests would need overruling.

1

Your care is never rushed

We set our own appointment lengths. When a visit needs more time, it gets more time, and the schedule absorbs it.

2

Referrals go where they should

We are not obliged to keep referrals inside a network. If the right specialist for your problem works somewhere else, that is where you go.

3

You see the same provider

Continuity is the quiet advantage of a small practice. The provider who saw you last year is the one reading your results this year, and they notice what has changed.

4

A real person answers the phone

Call (203) 270-1077 during office hours and you reach our front desk, not a regional call centre that has to look up which office you mean.

Our Medical Philosophy

One guiding principle, applied consistently

The practice has always operated on a single rule: every treatment decision should be based on what is best for the patient. It sounds obvious enough to be a platitude. It stops being one the moment a competing interest is introduced, which is exactly what consolidation does.

In practice that principle produces a fairly conservative style of medicine. We are guided by current national evidence — the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the relevant specialty societies — rather than by whatever is newest. We would rather explain why a test is not indicated than order it to end a conversation quickly.

It also means prevention gets weighted properly. Most of what shortens a life is detectable years before it becomes an emergency, and the annual physical is the least glamorous, highest-yield appointment in medicine. We treat it that way.

And it means being straight with you. If something is uncertain, we will say it is uncertain. If a decision is genuinely yours to make, we will lay out the trade-offs rather than making it for you.

"My family has been going to Community Health Associates in Newtown for over 2 years now. The professionalism, care and overall attention to detail is great. Also, the office goes the extra mile to try and make availability for situations that may need immediate attention."
